Summer of Movies 2019 - Extra Edition
Welcome back! Avengers: Endgame has been come and gone (and if you haven’t seen it, please do!) and now we can look forward to the insane summer that is fast approaching. May-August is traditionally my Summer of Movies time, but this year I’ve though perhaps that I’ve been narrow in my approach to only look at movies. So let’s see what we can get into, shall we?
May 10 - Detective Pikachu. It’s cute. It’s terrifying. It’s the world of Pokemon (TM). This time last year saw Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool in DP2, and his version of Pikachu looks to be as fun (if way less raunchy). The Pokemon animations are the perfect blend of creepy and adorable (Mr. Mime and Lickitung and Charizard and all).
If that ain’t your jam and you want a bit more adult, Tolkien is a biopic on the famed Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit author. I think I can wait until
May 17 - See You Yesterday (Netflix). When you aren’t watching the Game of Thrones Series Finale, or waiting for it to drop, let’s give this interesting time travel movie a spin.
Or, you can watch Keanu Reeves continue his bloodbath in John Wick 3: They Will Probably Make More of These.
May 21 - Blood & Treasure. TV series premiere!
May 24 - Aladdin. It’s a whole new world (sorry) with Disney’s live action remakes. And they are trying to take over! At first I was skeptical, but each trailer has slowly convinced me that my favorite Disney classic will be done justice. Also, Hot Jafar.
If that’s not adult enough for you, how about evil Superman movie Brightburn? Or stay at home and watch Rim of the World on Netflix.
May 31 - Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Some of my favorite series of trailers this year are for G:KotM. The look and sound design are great, and if the movie lives up to these expectations, I will be atomically satisfied.
On the small screen, catch Good Omens on Amazon!
June 2 - NOS4A2 on AMC. Vampires aren’t really that hot right now, but books to TV are always in vogue.
June 7 - Dark Phoenix. Let’s (sorta) close out Fox’s take on X-Men before (hopefully) Marvel builds to Avengers vs. X-Men. Will this version of Jean Grey/Phoenix give the comic book geeks what they want on-screen? With all the reshoots, I’d say they better. But probably not.
June 14 - Men in Black: International. Is it a reboot? Is it a sequel? Who cares, I’m gonna watch it because the MiB movies are fun and this looks no different. Don’t be a hater.
July 21 - Toy Story 4. Did we want this? No. Will we watch it? Yes. Will we cry? I didn’t stop from Toy Story 3, so…
Also the incredible Dark returns on Netflix for Season 2. Definitely deserves a binge-watch.
June 24 - Legion on FX. The final season of the trippiest genre show on television returns and ends. But doesn’t everything?
June 30 - The Rook on Starz. What’s this? A supernatural spy thriller show thing? Yes, please.
July 2, but also 5, because Movies - Spider-man: Far From Home. Watch this trailer if you have seen Endgame. Watch the below if you haven’t.
July 4 - Stranger Things on Netflix. Duh.
July 19 - The Lion King. Disney is dominating this summer, huh? Looks so pretty!
July 26 - The Boys on Amazon. Who watches the… oh, wait. Not that one.
August 2 - Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. I’m gonna be honest: I didn’t make it through the Fast & Furious franchise. But based off of the trailers alone, I’m assuming everyone in these movies is basically a superhero. And Idris Elba is definitely a super-villain.
August 9 - Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Oh, my. I read these as a kid and they creeped me out. The trailer creeps me out. Guillermo del Toro knows how to do it.
So let's go to the movies this summer! And/or stay at home in the AC and binge something! What are you excited to see?
