Summer of Movies 2018 - Nerd Edition
Welcome! If you know me, you know that Summer of Movies (May-August) is almost upon us. Now that we are past Avengers-mania, I just wanted to post the tentative list so you can get your rear in gear and join in watching some of the "finest" fare summer has to offer the geek in all of us. Watch a trailer, plan an evening, speculate wildly with me.
May 18 - Deadpool 2. If you've seen the first, you know what to expect from the Merc with a Mouth. Hopefully just bigger and more ridiculously meta. Cable, who in the comics is the child of Jean Grey and Cyclops from the future, also makes his cinematic debut. Let's see how much they will be able to make fun of that confusing mess!
May 25 - Solo: A Star Wars Story. The second off-shoot Star Wars story after the surprisingly good Rogue One takes a look at young Han Solo before he meets up with Luke and Leia. Personally, I'm hoping for more Lando/Chewie shenanigans than Han. Fun fact: Donald Glover was attached to an animated Deadpool show that was supposedly cancelled recently. Also, Game of Thrones' Daenerys (Emila Clarke) and Hunger Games' Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) are in this!
June 1 - Upgrade. Not-Tom-Hardy Logan Marshall-Green gets a Beyonce song (Upgrade U) chip implanted and becomes, his words, a f****** ninja.
June 8 - Ocean's 8 & Hotel Artemis. Ok, so Ocean's 8 might not be "nerd" enough, but I'm super excited for it and want it to do well. Focusing on Debbie Ocean instead of Danny Ocean but still in the same universe as the Ocean's Trilogy could really jumpstart an entirely new set of movies with an incredible cast.
If that's not your thing, we've got Hotel Artemis. Could be good; I like Jodie Foster.
June 15 - Incredibles 2. Speaking of incredible things returning over a decade later, we pick up right where we left off with the Parr family. Hopefully that much time has helped create a great story and not burdened it with the weight of said time.
Whoa. Downer, Jason. I'm sure it'll be fine, if not... INCREDIBLE. *ba dum tss*
June 22 - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Hey, it's dinosaurs and also Jeff Goldblum and Chris Pratt. At the very least, it'll be fun to watch.
July 6 - Ant-Man and the Wasp. Let's get some more leading women in the MCU, yeah! The first Ant-Man was good on sight gags and Paul Rudd, so here is pulling for lots more of Michael Pena's Luis telling long stories and Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne kicking butt.
July 13 - Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot. On a more serious and less sci-fi front, this is based on the true story of cartoonist John Callahan. Drunk driving, paralysis, depression. Let's do it.
July 27 - Mission: Impossible - Fallout & Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. The trailer makes it look like the movie is basically all Tom Cruise getting beat up and slamming into things; I'm down.
And Teen Titans Go! is a great show and will probably be a great movie. Not just for kids, but take your kids, if you have them, or take your friends' kids. If you have friends.
August 3 - The Darkest Minds. Are you upset over the new X-Men movies being pushed? Kinda missing the Maze Runner films? Same. This trailer gives me those vibes, and since it is based on a book series, they have more to pull from if this does well.
August 10 - A.X.L. Without a trailer, this is hard to say if it looks good or not, but just hearing that it's kinda like Short Circuit but with a robot dog? That gets the benefit of the doubt in my book. UPDATE: Now with trailer that doesn't really convince me.
August 17 - The Happytime Murders. Also without a trailer, but muppets + murder = probably something I will like. UPDATE: Now with very very NSFW trailer. Definitely going.
August 24 - Replicas & Slender Man. Science Fiction Future Man Keanu Reeves vs Scary Slender Man THAT I WILL NOT BE WATCHING K THX BYE.
August 31 - Kin. No trailer for this, either, but the poster and synopsis sure looks interesting! "KIN, a pulse-pounding crime thriller with a sci-fi twist, is the story of an unexpected hero destined for greatness. Chased by a vengeful criminal (James Franco), the feds and a gang of otherworldly soldiers, a recently released ex-con (Jack Reynor) and his adopted teenage brother (Myles Truitt) are forced to go on the run with a weapon of mysterious origin as their only protection." UPDATE: Now with trailer and YES.
So let's go to the movies this summer!
